‘Southland’ moves to TNT, and Tom Everett Scott hopes to be along for the ride

The strange saga of “Southland” takes a hopeful turn when the police drama, which began on NBC, starts its run on TNT at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Tom Everett Scott, who plays Detective Russell Clarke, has gone to lengths to promote the drama from “ER” executive producer John Wells. Scott came to Orlando last week for a special screening for fans, and he was later headed to a screening in Boston. Why the big push?

“I had never been on a show that got picked up for a second season until ‘Southland’ did,” Scott said. “Then a couple of things happened. The show got canceled before they aired any new episodes.”

NBC had moved Jay Leno into prime time and cut back on drama. We know how that worked out, don’t we? “The Jay Leno Show” ends Feb. 11.

“Even before that, they were going to write my character off and bring somebody else on,” Scott said. “NBC had their reasons for doing that. Whatever. It was fine.”

Scott agreed to do three more episodes to wrap up his character, who was shot in the season finale. Don’t worry: The detective survived.

And now that NBC is out of the picture? “Hopefully, I’ll be able to stick around if they make more episodes,” Scott said.

TNT will present the first seven episodes that aired on NBC, then offer the six new episdoes that never made it to the Peacock Network. If “Southland” clicks on TNT, more episodes could be ordered.

Scott didn’t want to get into the NBC part of the story — “it’s just really weird” — but thinks the drama is in a place where it will get attention.

“It’s a quality show, and it needs a place to be seen,” Scott said. “It’s tough to ignore the shifting landscape of the business. I think there always will be demand for good content. It’s just how it’s viewed will change.”

Scott has dozens of television credits, from “ER” to “Sons of Anarchy” to “Saved,” a TNT show that didn’t come back. He also played a governor character modeled on Eliot Spitzer on “Law & Order” and shared scenes with “awesome” Sam Waterston.

“It was fun to play a powerful person with bad habits,” Scott said.

But “Southland” is Scott’s focus. “I’m promoting it because I believe in it,” he said.
