Apr 26, 2010 TNT has ordered a 10-episode third season of Southland. The gritty cop drama, which TNT resurrected after NBC canceled the show before its Season 2 premiere, averaged 2.7 million viewers during its second season on the cable channel. The numbers were below the network's average, which left the show's fate in question. "Southland is a challenging, visceral show that engages viewers with its immersive style, provocative storylines and complex characters," Michael Wright, executive vice president of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies, said Monday in announcing the renewal. "These qualities have made Southland a favorite among critics and appointment viewing for an extremely loyal audience." Southland creator on finale: "Every character is faced with a huge crisis" Created by Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue) and executive-produced by John Wells (ER, The West Wing) and Christopher Chulack (ER, Third Watch), the series stars Michael Cudlitz, Benjamin McKenzie, Regina King, Kevin Alejandro, Shawn Hatosy and Tom Everett Scott. The show follows the daily lives of Los Angeles police officers, both on and off the job. Season 3 is slated to begin airing in January 2011. [source ]

After 15 years in the business, Tom Everett Scott thought nothing in Hollywood could shock him anymore. Then NBC canceled his series “Southland” before airing any of the six completed episodes of the second season. Then something even more unexpected happened - TNT picked up the show. “Every time a show gets canceled, someone says, ‘Oh, it will be bought. It’s such a good show.’ And it never happens,” the East Bridgewater native said in a recent interview at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. “But it did, and I think that was just as shocking as getting canceled.” Scott’s character, Detective Russell Clarke, was shot by his volatile neighbor in the final minutes of the first season finale. As the second season opens tonight at 10, Russell is slowly recovering from his injuries.

The strange saga of “Southland” takes a hopeful turn when the police drama, which began on NBC, starts its run on TNT at 10 p.m. Tuesday. Tom Everett Scott, who plays Detective Russell Clarke, has gone to lengths to promote the drama from “ER” executive producer John Wells. Scott came to Orlando last week for a special screening for fans, and he was later headed to a screening in Boston. Why the big push? “I had never been on a show that got picked up for a second season until ‘Southland’ did,” Scott said. “Then a couple of things happened. The show got canceled before they aired any new episodes.” NBC had moved Jay Leno into prime time and cut back on drama. We know how that worked out, don’t we? “The Jay Leno Show” ends Feb. 11. “Even before that, they were going to write my character off and bring somebody else on,” Scott said. “NBC had their reasons for doing that. Whatever. It was fine.” Scott agreed to do three more episodes to wrap up his character, who was shot in the season finale. Don’t worry: The detective survived.
